The concept behind this project is that all of my imaginary, procedurally drawn maps could have been drawn in different ways, and it’s only the choices that I made in the moment that give them the city characteristics that they have now.
The full conception is of a static artwork displayed with inset screens that can recombine parts of the map over time.
To fully realize this piece will also include further exploring the potential of algorithmically-drawn imaginary maps. The redrawn portions in these animations are currently drawn by hand (which is clear in the stop-motion GIF below; less obvious in the digital drawing that follows). However, if it were possible for computer code to complete my unfinished maps, the theoretical installation could recombine itself indefinitely.
